obama is meeting with his war council in the situation room. it is a who's who of national security advisers. biden, clinton, gates and five generals all in attendance. the goal, to make a final decision on how many more american troops will be sent to fight in afghanistan. the white house says the president is taking his time, so that he can make the right decision for the country. >> i think the american people want the president to take the time to get this decision right. rather than to make a hasty decision. >> well, that's not enough to keep critics at bay. former vice president dick cheney taking the opportunity to take a swipe at the white house. >> the delay is not cost-free. it's not one of these deals where you can sit there and delay and delay and delay and think you'll make a better decision. every day that goes by raises doubts in the minds of our friends and allies in the region about what you're going to do, raises doubts in the minds of the troops. >> cheney and other critics may not have to wait long. the president is expected to announce his troop strategy as earl

goodness, i wonder how they snagged an invitation to the most exclusive dinner and the first of the obama administration. their names were not on the list. but it never occurred me, ever kurd to me that they actually crashed this party. >> fran, let me bring you into this. you've been to the white house. you've worked at the white house, you know what happens, what was your reaction? >> first, campbell, normally, what happens when you first come up to the first checkpoint, there's also a member of the social services office, typically, a young staffer with a clip board that has the name just in case such a thing happens. so if you get up there, and you're not up in the secret service system, and some dispute, they'll check. if you're not in the system and your name is not on the social secretary's list, you don't get in typically. so you have to wonder, this is a very large event. typically state dinners are held in the east room which holds somewhere in the neighborhood of 175 people for a seated dinner. this had over 300. i imagine the size of it and the chaos of everyone arriving at th

this week's state dinner as you can see here actually got to meet president obama in a receiving line. there is michaele salahi, her husband is just off to the side in that photograph as well. there are also new details tonight of the investigation into just how that couple was able to access the state dinner. white house correspondent dan lothian joining us live. >> reporter: we're getting a clearer picture about what happened on tuesday night. that uniformed secret service agent did check the list when the couple arrived. their names were not on the list. and so normally what would happen is they would not be allowed to come in or you would have to call someone else to find out if perhaps their names were on another list. but, in fact, this secret service uniformed agent allowed them to go in, thinking that they would be somehow screened again at another point. in fact, they were not and they went on to mingle with very high level dignitaries who were there including the vice president. and as you pointed out, we now know that they also met the president in the receiving line. there
